Nuclear Cardiology

Scintigraphy is a form of testing where radioisotopes (short lived radioactive substances) that localize in the heart are injected into a patient and then imaged using external detectors to create an image that allows our physicians to assess myocardial blood flow and evaluate the pumping function of the heart. This is often done with exercise stress testing or pharmacological stress testing to help us identify narrowing of the coronary arteries that maybe impeeding blood flow during stress.

Echocardiography simply stands for heart ultrasound. This is a test where the heart structure and function is visualized using sound waves. A Transthoracic Echocardiogram is a simple and painless test that can offer our physicians a great view of how your heart is doing. While it doesn't give us all the answers it can help us assess the heart's pumping function and valves in ways that other tests cannot. Sometimes this test can be combined with exercise stress testing to give us an idea of how your heart functions under stress.

We also perform transesophageal echocardiograms which is a more invasive version of the test used to better assess the heart vales, congenital abnormalities, and evaluate for clots in the heart.
